What's the story?
The Mousetrap by Agatha Christie had its world premiere on 6 October 1952 at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham. After a short tour it opened in London at the Ambassadors Theatre on Tuesday 25 November.
In the cast were Richard Attenborough, Sheila Sim, Martin Miller, Jessica Spencer, Aubrey Dexter, Mignon O’Doherty, Allan McClelland and John Paul.
Nottingham was chosen as the opening venue as Agatha Christie believed the Theatre Royal was “lucky”, having premiered other shows here, which had gone on to greater success.
It is often believed that Agatha Christie sat in one of our boxes to watch the production. However, Omar Charles, now a resident of Bangkok contacted the Theatre Royal and informed them …
“My late mother often attended Agatha Christie’s opening nights at the Theatre Royal after the Second World War, and used to sit in the dress circle, where she said Agatha Christie used to sit. She told me she sat directly behind Agatha Christie at the opening night of The Mousetrap. However she told me this some 30 years after the fact.”
Since its Nottingham opening, The Moustrap has since become the longest-running, most watched play in theatre history. It is now firmly established at the St. Martin’s Theatre in London, where it has been for 42 years, during its 67 year run.
In 2012 the show celebrated its 60th anniversary, which included a UK tour. Cast included Steven France, Karl Howman, Bruno Langley, Elizabeth Power, Bob Saul, Graham Seed, Jemma Walker and Claire Wilkie.
