Animal Farm - Leaflet, 1985
Date
7 October 1985
Description
Double-sided leaflet for National Theatre production of Animal Farm by George Orwell.
What's the story?
Reflecting the events and aftermath of the 1917 Russian Revolution, Animal Farm was first published in 1945.
This National Theatre stage adaptation premiered in London in April 1984 and was adapted and directed by Peter Hall, with music and lyrics by Richard Peaslee and poet Adrian Mitchell.
It subsequently toured to nine cities across the UK in 1985.
Included in the cast was Barrie Rutter, founder of Northern Broadsides Theatre Company, as the power-hungry pig, Napoleon.
In 1986 at the Theatre of Nations Festival in Baltimore U.S.A, this production of Animal Farm was removed from the festival due to objections from the Soviet Union. This elicited a number of protests, with Peter Hall describing the decision as ‘Orwellian’.
The production was eventually staged, but as an independent production.
