Description
Selected pages from programme for Tantalus, the epic play about the Trojan War, produced by the Denver Center Theatre Company and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
What's the story?
Written by John Barton over a period of twenty years, Tantalus is a massive theatrical epic that tells the whole story of The Trojan War, featuring classic characters in Greek mythology, such as Helen, Achilles, Agamemnon, Cassandra and the Trojan Horse itself.
Tantalus was presented as three full-length plays: Part 1 -The Outbreak of War, Part 2 - The War and Part 3 - The Homecomings.
As well as seeing these plays individually, as a unique theatrical event at the Theatre Royal, audiences also had the opportunity to see all three plays in one day. An experience that many audience members rate as one of their most memorable Theatre Royal experiences, including Jeremy Lewis, theatre reviewer for the Nottingham Evening Post.
Peter Hall and Edward Hall directed an Anglo-American cast, that included Alan Dobie, Greg Hicks, Ann Mitchell and David Ryall.
In reviewing the show Michael Billington in The Guardian stated … “the overall impression is of a grand production that captures the variety and vigour of these lost myths.”
