Description
Local television commercial for Theatre Royal performances of musical comedy Me and My Girl.
What's the story?
Me and My Girl is a celebrated musical comedy by Noel Gay, made famous for its songs The Lambeth Walk and The Sun Has Got His Hat On.
Although a big hit at the end of the 1930s, it only had a few minor revivals in the following years.
In the 1980s, it returned to the West End with a new musical book by Stephen Fry and starred Robert Lindsay and Emma Thompson. It was huge success. It ran for eight years and received two Olivier awards. It transferred to Broadway and won three Tonys.
This 1994 touring production starred Andrew O’Connor.
Andrew returned to the Theatre Royal in 2007 to direct the film Magicians starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb, which used the Theatre Royal for many of its key scenes. Please see David Mitchell’s video diary in the links below.
This short commercial for Me and My Girl ("It's sensational entertainment") was produced by the Theatre Royal for marketing the show on local television.
Many thanks to Paul Hough at Broadway Cinema for transferring this footage to digital use from an old collection of VHS tapes discovered at the back of the Theatre Royal’s archive room.
