Aladdin - Playbill, 1886
Date
27 December 1886
Description
Victorian playbill for Aladdin, the Theatre Royal Nottingham pantomime for 1886.
What's the story?
There is a strong local Nottingham connection with this pantomime, as it was written by George Dance, born in the city in 1857.
George Dance (1857 - 1932) was known for being a songwriter and theatrical manager. Some of his most famous works include The Gay Parisienne and A Chinese Honeymoon.
By the early twentieth century he had become one of the most successful theatre managers in the UK and was known as the Napoleon of the Touring Companies. In 1923 he was knighted in recognition of his services to theatre, this included a gift of £30,000 towards the reconstruction of the Old Vic.
Dance also wrote the following year's Theatre Royal pantomime, Babes in the Wood, in 1887.
On this playbill, the equivalent of a modern theatre poster, you can see the complete cast list and synopsis of scenes, as well as admission prices and a note that 'Children in Arms not admitted'.
