The Gondoliers - Programme, 1927
Date
21 March 1927
Description
Full programme for Gilbert and Sullivan operetta The Gondoliers, presented by Nottingham Mechanics Institution Amateur Operatic Society.
What's the story?
Nottingham Mechanics Institution Operatic Society was formed in 1893 at Nottingham Mechanics Institute. Its aims were “To cultivate the knowledge of Operatic music and to devote to charitable institutions such funds as may result from its public performances after paying the necessary expenses”.
Their first production was Les Cloches de Cornerville by Robert Planguette and was staged on Thursday 18 January 1894 at the Mechanics Hall.
In 1925, the Society moved to the Theatre Royal with a production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Yeoman of the Guard. In 1930, the name of the Society changed to Nottingham Operatic Society and has become an annual fixture at the Theatre Royal.
Therefore, this 1927 programme for The Gondoliers is significant for being one of the first appearances of the society at the Theatre Royal before it changed its name to the more familiar Nottingham Operatic Society.
