Description

Souvenir programme for 1955 production of The Desert Song, presented by Nottingham Operatic Society.

What's the story?

The Desert Song is an operetta with music by Sigmund Romberg and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, Otto Harbach and Frank Mandel, with a romantic story inspired by true events, set in the Moroccan desert.
The show opened on Broadway in 1926, enjoying a very successful run, with popular revivals taking place over the next 40 years.
Nottingham Operatic Society’s commitment and stature is shown by this detailed souvenir brochure, accompanying their main programme. See related link below.
This programme was loaned to the Theatre Royal by Lesley Brown from a collection of theatre memorabilia owned by her late father-in-law William Gordon Brown, a keen performer and member of Nottingham Operatic Society.
William Brown in fact performed in this production and can be seen in the middle of the centre row for the photograph of the Gentlemen of the Chorus.
