This 1981 production of Aladdin starred Barbara Windsor, Keith Harris & Orville, Billy Dainty, Gordon & Bunny Jay, Peter Bland, Jane Wellman, Patrick Wilkes, Paul Tomany, Carole Anne Darrock and Giancarla Pfleger and Emerson & Jayne.
This Pantomime broke all previous Theatre Royal records, taking £2.5 million at the box office. Equivalent to over £7 million in 2018. By opening night it had taken £370,000.
The programme states ‘OPENING 2.00 PM 23 DECEMBER 1981 – FOR A SEASON.
Little did they know how long that season would be. It was so popular that the finishing date kept being extended until it finally ended on 10 April having run into Easter and entering the Guinness Book of Records that year.
