Larry Shue’s 1981 American comedy The Nerd was a star vehicle for actor and comedian Rowan Atkinson.
At the time of this production Atkinson was a famous TV star due to his work on Not the Nine O’Clock News and the first series of Blackadder.
Atkinson plays the role of Rick Steadman in The Nerd, a part that was to be subsequently played in 1987 by Mark Hamill, from Star Wars, on Broadway.
During the London production, following this tour, Atkinson appeared on stage with a 10-year-old Christian Bale, later to become a major movie star, with films such as Batman Begins, American Psycho and Vice.
