Description
Double-sided leaflet for Newpalm Productions of Steaming by Nell Dunn.
What's the story?
Steaming by Nell Dunn, her first stage play, is set in a Turkish baths in London and focuses on the lives of six different women who visit there regularly to relax and be themselves.
It was first staged in July 1981 at the Theatre Royal Stratford East and quickly transferred to the Comedy (now Harold Pinter) Theatre in the West End where it ran for two years and won the 1981 Laurence Olivier award for Best Comedy.
A film version was made in 1985 starring Vanessa Redgrave, Sarah Miles and in her last film role, Diana Dors.
This 1984 touring production starred Anna Karen (famous as Olive in On the Buses), Penelope Horner, Clare Kelly, Valerie Pfeiffer, Maggie Flint, Terry Duggan and Eve Bland.
Nell Dunn’s most notable other work includes her 1963 short story collection Up the Junction and the 1967 novel Poor Cow.
The show is advertised as being not suitable for children, as for befitting a Turkish baths, the actors are often disrobed throughout.
