Description
Leaflet for Last of the Summer Wine, the stage version of the popular BBC TV series and starring Bill Owen and Peter Sallis.
What's the story?
Centring on the mis-adventures of a group of old Yorkshiremen, Last of the Summer Wine was a BBC TV sitcom written by Roy Clarke. It aired for thirty-one series from 1973 to 2010.
In this stage version Bill Owen and Peter Sallis reprised their TV roles of Compo and Clegg
Following its week at the Theatre Royal the show went on to enjoy a successful summer season at the Pier Theatre Bournemouth.
What is interesting about this stage version is that it gave writer Roy Clarke an opportunity to introduce new characters, which he could then develop into the continuing TV series.
The show’s tagline … ‘All the warmth and laughter you could want in the world’ … seems to sum up the gentle nostalgia that the programme evoked.
