Description
Two Nottingham Evening Post advertisements promoting and then showing cancellation of You and the Stars variety show for 2nd Anti-Aircraft Corps Welfare Funds.
What's the story?
You and the Stars was a variety show scheduled to take place at the Theatre Royal on Sunday 2 November 1941.
All proceeds from the show were contributing to the war effort and featured famous stars such as Tommy Trinder, Clifford Mollison, Cicely Courtneidge and her husband Jack Hulbert.
However, as seen from the second advertisement the show had to be cancelled at short notice due to “the intervention of Lord’s Day Observance Society”
Basing their strong position on the fourth of the Ten Commandments, the Lord’s Day Observance Society (now known as Day One Christian Ministeries) was founded in 1831 and became the most powerful sabbatarian organisation in England, opposed to Sunday newspapers, train travel, and mail delivery.
In 1941 it was still clearly an influential force that even a concert in aid of helping the war effort could not deter.
