Title
Theatre Royal Auditorium - Photograph, 1941
Date
August 1941
Description
Image of Theatre Royal auditorium taken in August 1941.
What's the story?
This image was sent to the Theatre Royal in October 2018 from the Nottingham Local Studies Library, who discovered it in their collection. It is marked on the reverse:
'Please return to THEATRE ROYAL NOTTINGHAM'
Photograph duly returned, albeit 77 years later.
There is a stamp on the reverse stating 'SPENCER, Commercial Photographer, SHAKESPEARE ST, NOTTINGHAM'
This is one of the best images seen of the Theatre Royal from that period, highlighting Frank Matcham's signature flourishes at the top of the Upper Circle box.
Please click on the related link below to see virtually the exact shot, but taken in 1978 following the extensive refurbishment.
Note how the 1970s refurbishment evened out the Dress Circle box to make it in line with the rest of the Circle. A controversial architectural decision.
