Title
Aladdin - Book of Words, 1911
Date
26 December 1911
Description
Selected pages from the Book of Words for Aladdin, the Theatre Royal Pantomime for 1911.
What's the story?
For many Victorian and Edwardian Pantomimes, customers purchased the Book of Words to accompany the Pantomime they were seeing.
Like modern day programmes, this provided cast information and local adverts, but also included the full script for the show.
The 1911 Aladdin Book of Words owned by the Theatre Royal is in an extremely delicate state and so only selected pages have been digitised for the archive so far.
This Book of Words contains a total of 92 pages and its basic Aladdin plot, cast of characters, comedy business and synopsis of scenes would not be completely out of step for modern audiences.
The final words of the show are spoken by Princess So-Shi, having been rescued by Aladdin from the evil clutches of Abanazar …
Thank goodness we’re in time
To end this Pantomime,
And save the lovely heroine
From such a cruel fate.
Ungrateful wicked scamp
Restore the stolen lamp,
And thus there ends,
We trust, kind friends,
Aladdin up to date.
This production was the fifteen pantomime produced by Robert Arthur at the Theatre Royal and like Qdos Entertainment in the 21st century, Arthur had an extensive range of Pantos in theatres up and down the country, including the Royal Court in Liverpool, Theatre Royal Manchester and Newcastle Theatre Royal.
