Date

29 December 1884

Description

What's the story?

This Theatre Royal production of Forty Thieves starred Mr Percy Compton as Ali Baba, Mr W E Richardson as Cassim Baba, Miss Emily Spiller as Ganem and Mr Harry Fischer as Shacabac.

On the front page of this programme is written:
'The peculiar adaptability of the Story of the 'FORTY THIEVES' for the introduction of Gorgeous Surroundings has included MR. CHARLES to introduce into the Golden Armour of the Robber Band, the beautiful ELECTRIC LIGHT. The expense of this Armour, and the Dresses, with Batteries and Appliances, has exceeded £1,000 and MR. CHARLES is indebted to G. E. SMITH, Esq, of Nottingham, for the interest he has taken in superintending the New Electric Room just added to the Theatre.'

This pantomime has only been staged at the Theatre Royal four times, in 1871, 1884, 1893 and 1902.
