What's the story?
The Old Vic was a very highly esteemed repertory company in London, with high-profile actors and performances. It was to form the core of the National Theatre, which Laurence Olivier created at the Old Vic in 1963, before moving to its home on the South Bank in 1976.
In 1961, Romeo and Juliet, along with The Merchant of Venice, formed part of the Old Vic’s second national tour.
In the previous year, the Old Vic had visited the Theatre Royal with productions of Macbeth, Saint Joan and The Importance of Being Earnest.
The cast for this production included Andre Van Gyseghem, John Stride, Peggy Mount and Joanna Dunham. The production was directed by Franco Zeffirelli.
