The Old Vic was a very highly esteemed repertory company in London, with high-profile actors and performances. It was to form the core of the National Theatre, which Laurence Olivier created at the Old Vic in 1963, before moving to its home on the South Bank in 1976.
In 1961, The Merchant of Venice, along with Romeo and Juliet, formed part of the Old Vic’s second national tour.
In the previous year, the Old Vic had visited the Theatre Royal with productions of Macbeth, Saint Joan and The Importance of Being Earnest.
The cast for this production included George Baker, Peter Baldwin, Michael Meacham, John Stride, Barbara Leigh-Hunt and Robert Harris.
