Description

Video commercial for Theatre Royal performances of musical Cats from 1995.

What's the story?

Cats is a musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, based on Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot.
Directed by Trevor Nunn and choreographed by Gillian Lynne, Cats first opened in the West End in 1981 and ran for twenty-one years, comprising 8,949 performances.
The show has been presented all over the world and has been translated into 19 languages.
This 1995 production at the Theatre Royal was part of the show’s second UK tour. It ran at the Theatre Royal for seven weeks, from Thursday 15 June to Saturday 5 August 1995.
Changes had to be made to the building to accommodate this show. A huge star-cloth was draped around the stalls auditorium, which was fixed from the interior of the ceiling. These fixings can still be seen in the Theatre Royal roof-space to this day.
It is unsure how this simply made video was used to promote the show. It would have been made with the consent of the show’s producers and yet uses Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No.3, instead of any actual music from the show.
Many thanks to Paul Hough at Broadway Cinema for transferring this footage to digital use from an old collection of VHS tapes discovered at the back of the Theatre Royal’s archive room.
