Description
Fold-out leaflet for two week Theatre Royal run of the musical A Chorus Line.
What's the story?
A Chorus Line is based around the lives of seventeen dancers auditioning for a Broadway musical. The music for the show was written by Marvin Hamlisch, with lyrics by Edward Kleban, and a book by James Kirkwood Jr. and Nicholas Dante.
The production opened on Broadway in July 1975 and was an enormous success, winning nine Tony awards, as well as the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
The original Broadway production ran for 6,137 performances, becoming the longest-running production in Broadway history until surpassed by Cats in 1997.
A London production opened in 1976 and was the first recipient of the Olivier Award for Best Musical.
This 1997 touring production starred Adam Faith as Broadway director Zach.
The production opened in February 1997 at the Theatre Royal Plymouth, followed by a 22 week tour.
The role of Zach is mainly an unseen voice from the auditorium, putting the auditioning dancers through their paces. However, when seen on stage Zach has to move and carry himself as if he has been a dancer all his life.
Despite not having a dancing background, Adam Faith threw himself into lessons and exercises to prepare for the role.
In Big Time: The Life of Adam Faith by David Stafford and Caroline Stafford, he is quoted as saying … “I wished I had learned 36 years ago. The physical sense of well-being is better than Prozac”.
