Title
Oliver Twist - Poster, 2004
Date
28 July 2004
Description
Poster for The Royal Company community production of Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, adapted for the stage by Jeremy Brock.
What's the story?
Oliver Twist was the first full stage production by the Royal Company, the Theatre Royal’s community theatre initiative run by the venue’s education department. Their previous production of The Government Inspector in 2002 was a promenade production around the Theatre Royal.
Utilising a large community cast of adults and children, David Longford, the play’s director chose to present the show as a melodrama to enhance the Victorian setting of the Theatre Royal and also to return audiences to the original Dickens story rather than the Lionel Bart musical.
The foreboding poster image was taken at Southwell Workhouse in Nottinghamshire, which is now looked after by the National Trust.
