Oliver Twist - Postcard 1906

Title

Oliver Twist - Postcard 1906

Date

30 April 1906

Description

Publicity postcard for 1906 production of Oliver Twist featuring the Oliver Twist.

What's the story?

An excellent example of early 20th century theatre marketing with a series of postcards depicting characters from Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist.
Mr. Tree’s Company refers to the legendary actors and theatre manager Herbert Beerbohm Tree (December 1852 to July 2017), who was famed for his lavish productions and went on to found the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1904.
It can also be seen that this performance was performed in ‘His Majesty’s Theatre’ in London, which Tree became manager of in 1899 following extensive rebuilding.
The writing on the back of the Oliver Twist character postcard is at times difficult to read, however it was sent to Dorothy Pembleton of Brooklyn House, Nottingham:
My dear Dorothy,
I am really busy [so] shall be unable to come to see you this week. I am so sorry. Please tell mother we could not yet wire her coat yesterday, but have today.
