What's the story?
The Pied Piper by poet and playwright Adrian Mitchell premiered at the National Theatre in London in 1986.
This 1989 touring revival starred Matthew Kelly in the title role, alongside Diane Louise Jordan, who was to become a presenter on BBC’s Blue Peter the following year in 1990.
Also, in the cast were Brian Hibbard, Jonathan Oliver, Anthony Renshaw, Winston Crooke, Granville Saxton, Victoria Hardcastle and Crispin Harris.
The children of Hamelin were played by local Nottingham children from Douglas Primary School in Radford and Cantrell Primary School in Bulwell.
In October 2020, the Theatre Royal was contacted by Jennie Atkinson, who had seen this programme for The Pied Piper on the archive and so shared her memories with us of being a child performer in the show …
“I had a fantastic time playing the part of a child and an underground rat for the Pied Piper of Hamlin. I was given this chance thanks to the Theatre Royal and Cantrell Primary School coming together.
Matthew Kelly stood out to me as he was so tall (I was only 10) and really funny and cared about us all on stage. He made my nerves go away sticking his tongue out when I was under the stage preparing to come out as a rat!!
At the end of the show he picked me up in the air it was brilliant!
Diane Louise Jordan was really lovely too and I think she brought her dog on stage with us!
We moved from Nottingham a year later to the Isle of Wight so unfortunately my acting skills went downhill!
Just wanted to say thank you for the fond memories it still means the world to me all these years on.”
This programme has been made available as a loan to the Theatre Royal for digitisation and uploading to the archive by the Wilson family in Nottingham. Their collection of Theatre Royal ephemera relates from 1980 to 2000. This was a period of regular theatre visits, inspired by their youngest son, described as “the driving force” for seeing so many shows at the venue.
Having heard an appeal for items relating to the Theatre Royal’s past, they contacted the venue to offer their important family collection.
