Babes in Arms - Leaflet, 1985
Date
7 May 1985
Description
Leaflet for Theatre Royal Plymouth production of Babes in Arms by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart starring Su Pollard and Matthew Kelly.
What's the story?
Featuring classic songs such as ‘My Funny Valentine’ and ‘The Lady Is A Tramp’, Babes in Arms opened on Broadway in April 1937, where it ran until December.
The show concerns a group of small-town American teenagers who put on a show to avoid being sent to a work farm by the town sheriff. This version, later sanitized, had strong political overtones, including two African-American youths who are victims of racism.
The film version was released in 1939 starring Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney and is very much the archetype for the ‘let’s do the show right here’ trope.
This 1985 touring production starred Matthew Kelly and Nottingham born Su Pollard.
