Description
Fold-out leaflet for musical version of The Phantom of the Opera by Ken Hill
What's the story?
Produced ten years before the more famous 1986 Andrew Lloyd Webber version, The Phantom of the Opera is a 1976 musical with book and lyrics by Ken Hill, adapted from the novel by Gaston Leroux. For his musical version, Hill wrote the original English lyrics to the music of Verdi, Gounod, Offenbach, Mozart, Donizetti, Weber, Rossini and Mozart.
The show started as a production on Morecambe Pier and was eventually produced at The Duke’s Theatre in Lancaster in 1976. In 1984 Hill revived the show where it played the Theatre Royal Stratford East. It was this production that inspired Lloyd Webber to produce his musical version of the story.
This 1991 touring revival starred Reginald March, Dilys Kaye and Peter Straker as The Phantom. The production ran in the West End for four months and received two Olivier award nominations.
This leaflet has been made available as a loan to the Theatre Royal for digitisation and uploading to the archive by the Wilson family in Nottingham. Their collection of Theatre Royal ephemera relates from 1980 to 2000. This was a period of regular theatre visits, inspired by their youngest son, described as “the driving force” for seeing so many shows at the venue.
Having heard an appeal for items relating to the Theatre Royal’s past, they contacted the venue to offer their important family collection.
