Description
Fold-out leaflet for The Woman in Black by Susan Hill, adapted for the stage by Stephen Mallatratt
What's the story?
The Woman in Black is a ghost novel written in 1983 by Susan Hill. It concerns a mysterious spectre in a small English town that seems to herald the death of children.
The novel was adapted for the stage by Stephen Mallatratt in December 1987 as a chilling Christmas production in Scarborough.
This successful show transferred to the West End in January 1989, where it still remains after 30 years, making it the second longest running play in the West End after The Mousetrap by Agatha Christie. The show has also toured regularly across the UK.
Described by the Daily Mail as ‘as truly nerve-shredding experience’, the adaptation skilfully uses just two actors to tell the story on a minimal theatrical set. For this 1991 touring production the actors were Frank Windsor and Brian Deacon.
This 1991 tour was part of Mobil Touring Theatre, a major arts sponsor during this period.
