Double-sided leaflet for Whirligig Theatre production of The Old Man of Lochnagar by HRH The Prince of Wales, adapted for the stage by David Wood.
What's the story?
Set in the highlands of Scotland, The Old Man of Lochnagar is a children’s story by Charles, Prince of Wales originally told to his younger brothers Andrew and Edward to entertain them.
The book was published in 1980 and as well as this musical stage version by renowned children’s writer David Wood, the story has been adapted into an animated film and a ballet.
On his website David Wood recounts adapting this story:
“Applying for the rights of The Old Man of Lochnagar involved a visit to Buckingham Palace to meet the Prince of Wales’ Private Secretary. I was delighted that my play was approved by the Palace, but sad and a little miffed that the Prince himself never came to see it!”
