What's the story?
Way Upstream is prolific playwright Alan Ayckbourn’s 25th play. It premiered at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough in October 1981. Its London opening took place at the National Theatre’s Lyttleton Theatre the following year.
The play is set on a cabin cruiser and requires a great deal of water on stage. The show was meant to open in London in August 1982, but technical problems caused huge delays, including the bursting of the water tank on stage which flooded the theatre.
For the show’s eventual but severely delayed press night in October 1982, Jack Tinker, the Daily Mail theatre critic turned up wearing wellington boots.
The play was mostly praised. Peter Hepple in The Stage stated, "at times the author achieves what he has never accomplished before - suspense and acute disturbance. A pointer for the future, possibly."
However, Sheridan Morley in Punch came straight to the point … "Another Scarborough wreck has been hauled south and the sooner it gets a decent burial at sea the better."
This 1984 touring production starred Norman Eshley, Norman Rossington, Geraldine Gardner, Christina Barryk, Helen Dorward, Carrie Lee-Baker and Tim Meats.
