Description
Programme cover for The Desert Song from 1962.
What's the story?
The Desert Song is an operetta with music by Sigmund Romberg and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, Otto Harbach and Frank Mandel, with a romantic story inspired by true events, set in the Moroccan desert.
In Manchester in 1957 John Hanson first played the dashing 'Red Shadow', the hero of The Desert Song. A role that he was to become most famous for in the many regional theatres he played.
So much so that when comedian Eric Morecambe met Hanson he simply said, "Left your camel in the car park, have you?"
However, for this 1962 touring production, the show starred Yorkshire singing star David Whitfield.
“Other stars in the company” were Desmond Walter-Ellis, Felicity Page, David Fallon, Ernest Hare, Sydonie Gilchrist, Olga Lowe, Doreen Croft and Howarth Nuttall.
The Desert Song was once hugely popular show that has now become very rarely staged.
