Description
Poster for satirical farce Anyone for Denis by John Wells and starring Bob Grant and Janet Hargreaves.
What's the story?
Based on the Dear Bill letters, purportedly written by Denis Thatcher and published in Private Eye, Anyone for Denis was a farce written by satirist John Wells.
Actor Angela Thorne originally played the role of Margaret Thatcher, with Wells also playing the role of Denis Thatcher when the show opened at the Whitehall Theatre in 1981.
Set in the Prime Minister’s country retreat of Chequers the show satirises Thatcher and her government, which came to power just two years earlier.
The show was a big success and the real-life Thatchers went to see the show when it opened. They even hosted a party for the cast at 10 Downing Street.
A BBC interview broadcast on 13 July 1981 asked Mrs Thatcher for her comments on the show …
Thatcher:
We had a very enjoyable evening. It's a marvellous farce and I do think that the girl who played me, Angela Thorne, she's wonderful. She's absolutely terrific. She's obviously spent a tremendous time studying everything I do.
Reporter:
But what about your husband?
Thatcher:
No, not quite right. Not at all right. But then they don't see as many tapes of Denis Thatcher as they do of me. No-one could get him right possibly. The real thing's so different and so much better.
Reporter:
Did we see the real Mrs. Thatcher on the stage?
Thatcher:
No, of course not. Who would ever know that?
