Description

Selected pages from programme for political drama This House by James Graham

What's the story?

This House was a co-production between the National Theatre, Chichester Festival Theatre and Headlong.
Referring to the name given to the House of Commons by Members of Parliament, This House is set in the period of British Parliamentary history between the February 1974 general election and the 1979 vote of no confidence in the government of James Callaghan. The play focuses of the work and dealings of the Labour and Conservative Chief Whips, and various backbenchers.
The play premiered at the National Theatre in 2012 and eventually received its West End debut at the Garrick Theatre in 2016.
This production was its first national tour.
Playwright James Graham grew up in Nottinghamshire and for a brief time even worked at the Theatre Royal on Stage Door.
His other work includes Labour of Love, Ink and the book for the musical Finding Neverland. His TV scripts include Coalition and Brexit: The Uncivil War.
An interesting part of the staging for This House is that the audience could sit on either side of the stage on seating resembling the House of Commons. This brought you really close to the action of the play and at various times these audience members were encouraged to cheer in support of their political party.
At the interval you could even buy a pint at the Strangers Bar, a stage version of the famous House of Commons bar.
