Title
The Apache - Programme, 1927
Date
3 October 1927
Description
Full programme for the musical play The Apache, starring Carl Brisson.
What's the story?
The Apache has no connection with Native Americans.
It is a musical based upon a popular 1920s dance called The Apache.
Originally, it was a highly dramatic and controversial dance, as it demonstrated aggression and violence towards the female partner, with mock slaps, punches and hair pulling. This did get refined, but as a signature dance, it did not achieve long-lasting popularity, compared to other dances such as the Charleston.
Carl Brisson and his sister Tilly perform “The Sensational Apache Dance” in this show.
Carl Brisson was a Danish film actor and singer. He appeared in numerous films between 1918 and 1935, including two silent films directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
This production also starred Mona Magnet, Hugh Rene and Margaret Cochran.
We know that this would have been a hugely popular show as the programme states, ‘FREE LIST ENTIRELY SUSPENDED’, meaning no free or complimentary tickets are available. A full paying house is to be expected.
Also, notable in this programme is the note informing us that ‘This Theatre is sprayed with “Floral Spray” manufactured and supplied by Messrs. Cassons, Basford, Notts.’ What was this spray covering up?
