Title
D'Oyly Carte Opera Company - Playbill, 1928
Date
20 February 1928
Description
1928 playbill for two week run of Gilbert and Sullivan operas by D'Oyly Carte.
What's the story?
Established in the mid-1870s by theatre owner Richard D’Oyly Carte to solely produce the light operas of WS Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company toured all around the UK, Europe, North America and elsewhere until 1982, when it was disbanded due to rising costs.
The company was revived for short seasons and tours from 1988 and in 2013 made a substantial comeback with a co-production of The Pirates of Penzance with Scottish Opera.
This 1928 D’Oyly Carte presentation at the Theatre Royal features many of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most famous comic operas, namely The Mikado, Iolanthe, The Gondoliers, Trial by Jury, The Pirates of Penzance, The Yeoman of the Guard, Ruddigore, HMS Pinafore, Patience, Cox & Box and Princess Ida.
In the cast is Henry Lytton (1865 – 1936) who is regarded as the leading exponent of the comic patter-baritone roles in many Gilbert and Sullivan operas.
His career with D’Oyly Carte spanned 50 years, and he is the only person ever knighted for achievements as a Gilbert and Sullivan performer.
