Title
Peter Pan - Newspaper Cuttings, 1935
Date
13 March 1935
Description
Picture and local newspaper review of Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie, starring Jean Forbes-Robertson (actual newspaper not known)
What's the story?
These two newspaper clippings were enclosed inside the 1935 programme for Peter Pan, which was donated to the Theatre Royal archive in February 2019. Please see related link below.
The picture shows Jean Forbes-Robertson as Pan “battling with” Captain Hook played by Lionel Gadsden.
The review is extremely positive of the production … “Happy Kiddies at The Royal”
Whilst Peter Pan is now often seen purely as a Pantomime at Christmas, it is interesting to note here that the reviewer describes this production as “in the Barrie tradition … the best child-play ever written … No pantomime has equalled it in that respect, but pantomime often borrows from Peter”
Mention is also made of the flying effects from Joseph Kirby. Kirby’s Flying Ballet was later to become a spectacle at future Theatre Royal Pantomimes. Please see related link below.
