Title
Red Riding Hood- Production Photographs, 1950
Date
December 1950
Description
Production photographs featuring the aerial dancers from Kirby's Flying Ballet in Red Riding Hood, the Theatre Royal Pantomime for 1950.
What's the story?
The Theatre Royal production of Red Riding Hood is incredibly significant as it marks one of the early professional stage appearances of a 15-year-old Julie Andrews, in the title role, who can be clearly seen downstage stage left.
Red Riding Hood also starred comedian Tony Hancock.
These rare images are from the private collection of Gillian Haywood-Widdowson, who was one of the main aerial dancers in Kirby’s Flying Ballet and in the pictures is the central flying dancer.
There are oral interviews with Gillian and cuttings of her time in Panto from her private collection elsewhere on this site.
