Title
Summary of Renovations 1977
Date
1977
Description
A summary of the renovation of the Theatre Royal 1975 - 1977 written by architect Nick Thompson of Renton Howard Wood Levin Partnership
What's the story?
“…The Theatre Royal did not close until March 1977. Thus, most of the work in this technically complex building has been completed in only eleven months: a programme that was common in the 19th Century but considered by many to be virtually unobtainable in present day conditions….”
Nick Thompson, the architect of the 1977 refurbishment, writes in this summary of the renovation, and compliments the tight management structure headed by Nottingham Director of Technical Services, John Haslam and Terry Crich, the head of the onsite Bovis team.
He describes initially encountering a “rather battered relic” where the backstage accommodation was so bad that major touring companies were refusing to appear.
He goes on to say that the building team was one of the hardest working and most enthusiastic labour forces they had ever encountered, and a great credit to many of the Nottingham firms involved.
