Title
Sketches/Drawings for Auditorium Chandelier, March 1977
Date
March 1977
Description
Original sketches and drawings by RHWL Partmership of the Theatre Royal chandelier, as part of the venue's refurbishment.
What's the story?
The Theatre Royal's chandelier is an iconic part of the venue, providing those who enter the auditorium with an immediate 'wow' factor.
Here are the original design sketches for the chandelier by the Renton Howard Wood Leven Partnership, architects for the 1977/78 refurbishment, showing that all metal work is to have a brass finish and glass chains to be recycled from the former chandelier.
In an early sketch from March 1977, the estimated cost is £5,000, equivalent to £21,000 in 2018.
The sketch also shows the height of the chandelier – 2.75m.
A later sketch from September 1977 for Arnold Montrose, the prestigious lighting manufacturer, (now absorbed into Dernier & Hamlyn) specifies the height should not exceed 3.5 m.
