Description
Selected pages from programme for The Peter Hall Company production of An Ideal Husband by Oscar Wilde
What's the story?
Oscar Wilde wrote his comedy An Ideal Husband in 1893 and it eventually opened on 3 January 1895 at the Haymarket Theatre in London and ran for 124 performances.
In April of the same year, Wilde was arrested for ‘gross indecency’ and his name was removed from the play. When the play was published in 1899, Wilde was still not listed as the author.
This production of An Ideal Husband starred Liza Goddard, Barbara Murray, Bryan Murray, Patrick Ryecart, Richard Todd and Julia Watson, with Katy Odey and Robin Browne.
The production was produced by Bill Kenwright, with original direction by Sir Peter Hall (1930 – 2017) under the auspices of The Peter Hall Company, Hall’s commercial company that went on to stage more than sixty plays in association with a number of producing partners, including Kenwright and Thelma Holt.
