Description

Selected pages from Full Circle, a romantic comedy by Alan Melville and starring Joan Collins.

What's the story?

Full Circle (previously known as Dear Charles) is a lesser-known play by Alan Melville, adapted from "Les Enfants d'Edouard" by Marc-Gilbert Sauvajon and Frederick J. Jackson.
The scandalous and risqué plot for its time focuses on Parisian author Dolores who decides it is time to legitimize her three grown children, so she invites their three fathers to a reunion party to decide which one she ought to marry.
This 2004 revival was clearly a star vehicle for Joan Collins, an actress whose film career started in the 1950s, but it was her TV role of the scheming Alexis Colby in Dynasty in the early 1980s that truly brought her major international fame.
For a 2004 interview at the start of the 14-week tour of Full Circle, Joan Collins describes the reasons for choosing this play and other aspects of touring for the BBC website …
"I consider myself to be a comedienne. I’ve always loved comedy, but I’m not really known for it.”
“I was looking for a play, I read this one and thought this is fun. It’s very entertaining and a little old fashioned – it’s set in the 1950s - but this will be something that people will enjoy."
"I didn’t want to do 14 weeks of Medea and be shattered. I wanted to do a play that I enjoy, and that people will go away feeling they’ve enjoyed."
"I’m a gypsy at heart. I’m looking forward to touring, I love it. It’s going to be tough but so what. That’s what this business is!"
"Theatre is more daunting [than film] in that you have to keep it fresh, but I came into this business to be a stage actress. I went to RADA. I wanted to follow in the footsteps of Vivien Leigh."
"I’m not Beyonce! I don’t have my dressing room redecorated, but I do make it homely. I have pictures of the family and cushions and make-up - which takes up an entire table!"
This production of Full Circle also starred Nicholas Grace, John Quale, Gary Raymond and Jeffrey Wickham. It was directed by Patrick Garland.
