Promotional postcard for a week-long run of plays from Henry Baynton and his Shakespearean company, presented by Robert Courtneidge.
What's the story?
Henry Baynton was a renowned actor-manager in the early twentieth century, having worked with both Henry Irving and F.R.Benson.
In 1920 he formed his own company, which was later taken over by producer Robert Courtneidge. Baynton later tried to revive his own company, but the venture failed, resulting in bankruptcy.
For his week-long performances at the Theatre Royal Nottingham, Baynton and his company performed six plays by William Shakespeare - A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Julius Caesar, King Henry the Eighth, The Taming of the Shrew, Hamlet and The Merchant of Venice.
The company also performed The Bells, a play strongly associated with Henry Irving and for which Baynton did not receive favourable reviews.
