Description
Leaflet for The Plays of Shakespeare starring Donald Wolfit.
What's the story?
Donald Wolfit was born at New Balderton, near Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire in 1902 and is often regarded as one of the last of the great theatrical actor/managers of the twentieth century.
He was a renowned Shakespearean actor, who enjoyed successful seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company, but is perhaps most well-known for his continual regional tours of classical work throughout the war years and beyond.
In The Plays of Shakespeare Wolfit is performing some of the great Shakespeare roles from As You Like It, Othello, The Merchant of Venice, plus Ben Jonson’s Volpone.
This touring production also marked Wolfit’s final appearances as Hamlet, a role that gained him a national reputation when performed at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford in 1936.
