What's the story?
Based in Leeds, Opera North have been a regular visitor to the Theatre Royal since the company was formed in 1978.
Opera North was established in 1977 as English National Opera North, as an offshoot of English National Opera, with the specific intention of delivering high-quality opera to the northern areas of England which, up to that point, had had no permanently established opera company.
The company gave its first performance, of Saint-Saƫns' Samson and Delilah, on 15 November 1978, which was also broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.
In 1981, the company's name was changed to Opera North.
For this 1983 week-long visit to the Theatre Royal, Opera North performed three productions in repertoire: Beatrice and Benedict by Berlioz; Der Freischutz by Weber and The Elixir of Love by Donizetti.
