Description
Front of leaflet for Robinson Crusoe, the Theatre Royal Pantomime for 1986.
What's the story?
This Pantomime production of Robinson Crusoe starred Rod Hull and Emu, Carol Lee Scott, Freddie Stevens, Paul Shane, Hilary O'Neil, Jack Tripp, Eli Woods and The Ding Bats.
Jack Tripp (1922 - 2005) was regarded as one of the country's most foremost Pantomime dames.
For his obituary The Stage newspaper wrote:
"Jack Tripp was widely regarded as Britain’s greatest pantomime dame. A brilliant visual performer and eccentric dancer, he followed in the tradition of such classic dames as George Robey, GS Melvin, Douglas Byng and George Lacey.
Whether as Mrs Crusoe, Widow Twankey or the nurse in Babes in the Wood, Tripp combined comedy with pathos, his eyebrows often raised in aristocratic query and his superior turn of the mouth a consistent trademark. He was a master of knockabout routines and was noted for his outrageous and inventive costumes such as a hat designed as a frying pan with bacon and poached eggs, or a dress resembling a green baize snooker table with carefully positioned pockets.
The only performer ever to be awarded the MBE for his 'services to pantomime', he was once described by The Stage as, 'the John Gielgud of pantomime dames'."
