Description
Poster for Robinson Crusoe, the 1972 Pantomime for the Theatre Royal
What's the story?
This production of Robinson Crusoe starred Ken Dodd (November 1927 to March 2018), with Lyn Kennington, Gordon & Bunny Jay, The Maljohns, Stanley Platts, Billy Whittaker and The Diddykids.
Despite having a unique relationship with Nottingham this was the only Pantomime Ken Dodd performed at the Theatre Royal, but he appeared there many times.
He gained his big break at age 26 when, in September 1954, he made his professional show-business debut at the Empire Theatre, the Theatre Royal’s sister venue and now site of the Royal Concert Hall. About this performance he later said, “Well, at least they didn’t boo me off”
His special relationship with Nottingham continued when he was invited to be the opening show following the Theatre Royal’s massive refurbishment in 1978.
He continued to perform his ‘Happiness Show’ until 2017 and he died aged 90 in March 2018. He was scheduled to perform once again in the Theatre Royal the following month.
