Description
Selected pages from the programme for Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the 1926 pantomime for the Theatre Royal Nottingham.
What's the story?
This production starred Douglas Byng (1893 - 1987), a Nottingham born comedian, entertainer and actor, as Dame Diddlem. He starred alongside Nora Bancroft as Roland, Betty Eley as Goldilocks and Frank and Albert as Showmen.
Douglas returned to pantomime at the Theatre Royal in 1944, when he played The Queen in The Sleeping Beauty.
When he was ten, he was sent to live in Germany with his older brother, who owned a lace factory there. He studied music and German, but chose to concentrate on fashion.
At the age of seventeen, after returning to Britain, he worked for the costume designer Charles Alias in London.
His first appearance on stage was in 1914 in Hastings, as a light comedian in a seaside concert party.
In 1970 he published his autobiography 'As You Were', whilst in semi-retirement in Brighton. This book provides the material for 'The Byng Ballads', a three part story about his life, broadcast in December 2012, with Julian Clary playing the part of Douglas.
Douglas has also recorded an LP of his most memorable songs.
