Donald Wolfit was born at New Balderton, near Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire in 1902 and is often regarded as one of the last of the great theatrical actor/managers of the twentieth century.
He was a renowned Shakespearean actor, who enjoyed successful seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company, but is perhaps most well known for his continual regional tours of classical work throughout the war years and beyond.
