Description
Selected pages from the programme and book of words for The House That Jack Built, the first Pantomime at the Theatre Royal in 1865.
What's the story?
The Theatre Royal Nottingham opened on 26 September 1865. Three months later on 26 December the theatre presented its very first Pantomime, The House That Jack Built, directed by the Theatre Royal’s manager Walter Montgomery.
As well as containing cast details and local advertisements, this programme and book of words also contained the script for the audience to follow or enjoy later.
A whole page is devoted to the ‘Refreshment Department’ of the New Theatre Royal. The following is of interest:
“Special Rooms are provided for LADIES and CHILDREN on each tier, where Tea, Coffee, and every comfort can be obtained, at very reasonable prices”
“Every necessary for the convenience of Gentlemen will be supplied as usual, from a Glass of Beer to a Bottle of Champagne”
