Title
The New D'Oyly Carte Opera Company - Programme, 1989
Date
5 June 1989
Description
Selected pages from programme for the New D'Oyly Carte Opera Company productions of The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan.
What's the story?
Established in the mid-1870s by theatre owner Richard D’Oyly Carte to solely produce the light operas of WS Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company toured all around the UK, Europe, North America and elsewhere until 1982, when it was disbanded due to rising costs.
The New D’Oyly Carte Company was revived for short seasons and tours from 1988, including this 1989 tour of The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado, under the artistic directorship of Bramwell Tovey.
This programme has been made available as a loan to the Theatre Royal for digitisation and uploading to the archive by the Wilson family in Nottingham. Their collection of Theatre Royal ephemera relates from 1980 to 2000. This was a period of regular theatre visits, inspired by their youngest son, described as “the driving force” for seeing so many shows at the venue.
Having heard an appeal for items relating to the Theatre Royal’s past, they contacted the venue to offer their important family collection.
