Title
Front-of-House Staff - Photograph, 1978
Date
1978
Description
Photograph of two front of house staff in 1978 following the venue's massive rebuild and refurbishment.
What's the story?
Standing at the entrance to the stalls auditorium, the two front-of house staff are wearing new Theatre Royal uniforms designed by Clare Ferraby, as part of the venue's refurbishment.
Located behind them, at the end of the short corridor, is a bust of Lord Byron. This is a cast taken from an original bust that is at Newstead Abbey, Byron’s ancestral home, located just outside Nottingham.
Architect Nick Thompson stated that he wanted to provide some focus in this small space before audiences entered the auditorium and so this cast was taken.
The decoration located above the stalls foyer entrance was originally inside the auditorium and was designed by Frank Matcham as part of his 1897 refurbishment. This was removed as part of the 1970s transformation and re-located to the stalls foyers.
