Description
Nottingham Evening Post theatre review of the musical Calamity Jane starring Toyah Willcox
What's the story?
In this review of Calamity Jane for the Nottingham Evening Post, Andy Smart describes the show as a ‘rumbustious production’
Any reviewer of this show has to make the comparison with Doris Day, who played the role in the 1953 film. Smart states:
“Eighties popstar Toyah lacks the vocal power and range to threaten the reputation of Hollywood’s original Calamity, Doris Day, but she covers that deficiency with a performance of admirable energy and enthusiasm which wins the audience over”
To accompany the review there is a picture of Toyah in full Calamity Jane costume, including whip, in the Theatre Royal stalls foyer.
