Description

Fold-out leaflet for musical Calamity Jane

What's the story?

Following the success of the MGM film Annie Get Your Gun in 1950, Warner Brothers Studios responded in 1953 with Calamity Jane, a musical set in the Wild West about frontiers-woman Martha Jane Canary, aka Calamity Jane, star of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.
The film starring Doris Day was a huge success and several musical stage versions have taken place over the years.
From September 2002 Toyah Willcox led a production of Calamity Jane throughout the UK, playing at the Theatre Royal Nottingham in March 2003.
In interviews for the show Toyah stated, “Our production is not saccharine sweet, it's really very ballsy. This isn't a sequinned production. We've tried to make it gritty”
The toured finished with a West End run from June 2003, however poor reviews (unlike its reception around the country) meant that it closed after just three months.
This fold-out leaflet is cleverly designed to reveal Toyah firing a gun, hence the ‘bullet-hole’ in the front of the leaflet.
